Depression treatment in Northbrook

Depression is more than sadness. It is a persistent change in energy, interest, sleep, appetite and the ability to feel anything much at all. People often wait a long time before getting help, partly because depression itself makes reaching out feel pointless.

What we look at first

A first appointment covers symptoms and duration, sleep, what has changed recently, medical history, and anything already tried. Some presentations that look like depression are driven by something else, including thyroid problems, sleep disorders, grief and trauma, so the evaluation matters.

Treatment options

• Therapy, which for depression has evidence behind it comparable to medication for many people
• Medication management, with real follow-up. Antidepressants take weeks to work and frequently need adjustment, and being left alone during that window is where treatment usually fails
• Combined treatment, which for moderate to severe depression often works better than either alone

When the usual treatments have not worked

If you have tried at least two antidepressants at adequate dose and duration without adequate response, that is called treatment-resistant depression, and it is common.
